Canadian distilling giants, Hiram Walker amassed a significant fortune during the Prohibition era in America as smugglers and bootleggers clamoured to spirit its whiskey south of the border. As such, the company was perfectly placed to capitalise on the vacuum that existed after repeal. The announced the construction of their distillery in Peoria in September 1933, which became the world's largest at the time. The company quickly became the target of anti-monopoly legislation along with the other members of a group known as the "Big Four," which included fellow Canadians, Seagram, alongside National Distillers and Schenley. Between them they commanded a 60% share of the American whiskey market during the 1930s. Distilling at Peoria took place until the 1970s when the company shut it down and largely divested from the American whiskey market to focus on their Canadian and Scotch whisky brands. They did however continue to bottle their stocks until diminished.
