In 1904, Louis Bustanoby (of the Cafe des Beaux Arts in NYC) patented his orb-shaped bottle design for his luxurious grapefruit, cognac, and spice liqueur. Before WWI the closure was in the shape of the Iron Cross, but the Bustanoby Brothers changed it to a crown in an effort to distance themselves from the German Empire.  After Prohibition the brand was acquired by the Philadelphia firm of Charles Jacquin et Cie (founded 1884), who later appropriated this banded orb bottle design for the raspberry liqueur Chambord, which they introduced in 1982 to huge financial success, Forbidden Fruit having been discontinued in the late 1970s.
