Maraschino liqueur is made from the Marasca cherries grown along the Dalmatian coast, Croatia. It was first produced on a large scale by Venetian merchant Francesco Drioli who founded his company in 1759. The traditional square green bottles were originally produced by Murano, and the straw covering, known as a fiasco, was introduced to protect the bottles during transit.
Drioli supplied Royal Households throughout Europe. English King George IV rerouted the Royal yacht to stop at Drioli to stock up on the liqueur on his voyage home.
