The story of John E. Fitzgerald was said to go back to the 1870s, when he opened a distillery on the bank of the Kentucky River and began producing amazing bourbon. This was where the Old Fitzgerald brand originated, though it shifted in and out of existence over the years. However, if you read the biography of Pappy Van Winkle, you would find a different story about John E. Fitzgerald. It’s this story has become the most trusted of origin tales for Fitzgerald. He wasn’t a distiller - bonded treasury agent, one of the only people to carry keys to the storage warehouses where oodles of bourbon matured. It turns out that Fitzgerald had a keen nose for great bourbon, and wasn’t particularly adversed to helping himself to the aforementioned great bourbon. His legend has been honoured in Heaven Hill’s Larceny, a wheated bourbon launched in 2012 that is made with no rye whatsoever, letting the corn’s creamy sweetness sing. Larceny’s current Master Distillery is Denny Potter.
