Also a caraway liqueur of about 40%ABV, Allash is a variety of kummel additionally flavoured with almonds, anise, angelica root and orange peel.  It was invented in 1823 at Allasch, a manor owned by Wilhelm von Blanckenhagen (1761–1840), but production there ceased in 1944 when the Soviet Union reoccupied Latvia and expelled ethnic Germans.  Exhibited at the Leipzig Trade Fair in 1830, Allasch became instantly popular and began to be manufactured there. Henceforth it was associated with Leipzig.  It received an honourable mention at London 1862 and gold medals at Antwerp 1885, and Paris 1889 and 1900.  The name Mentzendorff at the bottom of the label denotes the importer into England from c. 1850, which by the time of this bottling was no longer their agent.
