Part of the original wheated bourbon whiskey family - meaning production involves wheat instead of the usual rye for bourbons - W. L. Weller was a brand founded by the Stitzel-Weller Distilling Company which has been sold several times over the years and is now under the ownership of the Buffalo Trace Distillery. The bourbon takes the name of William Larue Weller who was apparently the first to produce straight bourbon using wheat in 1849. He developed his original bourbon recipe with wheat, rather than rye. Bottled at the same 114 proof the spirit was when it entered into the barrel, this non-chill filtered wheated bourbon forgoes chill filtration to preserve all the naturally occurring residual oils and flavours that occur during the distillation and ageing process.
In 2019, W. L. Weller introduced Full Proof Single Barrel Selection for annual release in limited quantities and in small batch format.
