A single-barrel rye whiskey from WhistlePig, this is the sixth edition of the exceptional Boss Hog range. It's called The Samurai Scientist, in honour of Jokichi Takamine, who pioneered koji fermentation in the world of American whiskey over a century ago. The rye whiskey itself was indeed made with koji fermentation, and it was finished in casks that held Japanese umeshu. As ever with the Boss Hog releases, these are single barrel whiskeys - no barrel blending here, folks!

From barrel #20!

Tasting Note by The Producer

Nose
Intensely aromatic, with cinnamon, maple, and toasted marshmallow that develops with time in the glass.

Palate Tobacco, ginger, baking spices, and savory umami creating a remarkably rich, nuanced and elegant profile lending to soft, sweet notes that further color the mosaic of flavor.

Finish Incredibly long, with oak spice, char, and just a touch of smoke lingers as the finish fades.

Tasting Note by Whisky Advocate

"Made using koji during fermentation and finished in barrels seasoned with umeshu , a plum liqueur. Earthy and a bit mysterious, with sandalwood incense, cedar smoke, eucalyptus, barrel char, and sweet aromas of vanilla taffy, key lime pie, and lemon oil. There’s a lot of dry oak on the palate, but it’s balanced with chewy herbs, lapsang souchong tea, pistachio, orange peel, milk chocolate, fennel, and peppery spice. The finish is long, spiced, and herbal, with licorice, mint, eucalyptus, and dry oak. Collectible" - 92/100, Whisky Advocate
