The history of the William Lawson's brands dates to 1889 when E&J Burke’s blending, bottling and export company in Dublin registered the trademark for Lawson’s Liqueur Whiskey. William Lawson was of Scottish origin, but had emigrated to Ireland where he joined Burkes as its secretary. They operated their Scottish blending from an office in Dundee and Liverpool, however operations were moved to Coatbridge in the 1960s when Martini & Rossi acquired the rights to the Lawson's blend, agreeing with DCL to rename it William Lawson's to avoid confusion with their Peter Dawson company. Martini & Rossie set up William Lawson's Distillers in 1972, acquiring Macduff distillery in the same year. Today, under the ownership of Bacardi, the William Lawson's blends are some of the best-selling in the world.
